CREATIVE SPOTLIGHT // 10 QUESTIONS WITH CALLIGRAPHER SAM TEICH
If you’ve been following the blog recently, you probably read the post about our Fall Preview Event, where we invited our NYC girl gang out to get a sneak peek of the season’s upcoming collection. Along with checking out the new denim, the girls were able to get their favorite pieces customized by calligrapher extraordinaire, Sam Teich. We had so much fun watching her work and even more fun getting to know her, so we decided to sit down and get a closer look into her everyday life, work and creative pursuits.
Where are you from?
I grew up in Maryland, right outside of Washington, DC.
What made you move to New York?
I moved to New York to attend NYU, and then stayed after graduation.
How long have you been doing calligraphy and what got you started?
My typical response to this is that I was a very nerdy child. I taught myself how to write in cursive when I was about 6, and my parents could always bribe me with new pens (seriously, it didn’t even have to be anything fancy — I’d raid the supply closets at their offices and swipe PaperMate ones…).
I’ve been doing calligraphy in some form or other since I was little (italic/blackletter style, brush calligraphy on a trip to China in middle school, pointed pen…) and I officially left my full-time desk job (as an editorial photo editor) a little over a year ago. Now I work on calligraphy projects for individual and corporate clients, run my own shop, teach workshops, and do live lettering events with brands I love, like Silver!
What has been your favorite project you’ve worked on?
This is so tough. I really love doing live events — it’s so fun being able to work with people to customize a piece right on the spot (and seeing all the creative things the girls at Silver wanted on their jackets!). I did an event last year with Persol where I got to personalize cases for sunglasses in Miami! And a few weeks ago, I did a set of place cards for a dinner for Moet with gold ink splattered “champagne bubbles” — I was obsessed! It was hard to send those off!
What’s the one item in your closet that you wear the most?
I love my denim jacket! I can throw it on over any outfit. But really, probably my SoulCycle leggings — I try to get to class as often as I can; it’s such a great antidote to concentrating on a project at my desk.
What’s the last song you listened to?
Basically every playlist I make includes some Phoenix, Radiohead, the xx and probably Tove Lo. But official last song was Ultralife by Oh Wonder.
The last TV show you binged?
Girlboss. And I’ve been re-watching Veronica Mars — I’ve lost count how many times I’ve watched it through, and it continues to get better.
What’s your favorite hangout spot in the city?
I love the garden cafe at the Standard in the East Village. It’s a perfect little mini-escape tucked away from the street, and they have some of the best cocktails downtown.
What’s one thing people might be surprised to know about you?
I’ve traveled to 35 countries!
